On September 17, 1862, a dirt road in Sharpsburg, Maryland changed hues — from a barren, dusty brown to a deep red — fresh soil, saturated with blood. The quiet strip of land, previously only tread by farmers, had become the fulcrum of the Civil War’s bloodiest battle.
